“Yearning for the Past” collection of Irinjalakuda stories by K. R. Narayanan (Appan)

Should we forget these great sons of Irinjalakuda, in due course of time?

K.R.NARAYANAN

If we watch around, every road/street/bye-lane of the urban/semi-urban cities/ towns in our country carry the name of some leader, social reformer or some one contributed to the development /welfare of that area. As you know, it started with the British Administers . After the independence, they were known after the leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel and the like.

2. We have celebrated the centinaries of many great Irinjalakudites, like late Yukthiwadi M.C.Joseph, a great Philanthropist, Ayurvedic Physician and a good businessman Shri. Kesavan Vaidyar and many other great sons of Irinjalakuda. Yesterday, we respectfully celebrated the birth centinary of a true Gandhian Socialist of our place - the late Shri.Puthu Achyutha Menon.

These are only a few and there many more of them (like teachers, men of letters, poets, artists, scientists, advocates, physicians, businessmen, social leaders, political leaders, etc) who cannot be forgotten by the Irijalakudites.

3. We ( especially the old timers of Irinjalakuda, who have been transplanted to different parts of the country and the world) gratefully remember these giants of our good old Irinjalakuda, as we walk/drive along the roads/streets, where they used to stay. Not only that, some of these grand old men have influenced our thoughts and actions greately to mould our minds and attitudes.

4. As a token of our respect to these great men of yore, can we not atleast name the roads/streets after them, lest the posterity should forget these great sons of Irinjalakuda, in due course of time? Can we not bring this feeling of ours to those concerned with the local administration?
